WHAT IS GOD LIKE?

#20 JUST LIKE JESUS CHRIST

An uncle once said to me 'Show me this God you believe in, and I'll believe in him.'

At that time my study of the Scripture had not yet brought me to the very simple response I should have made to this challenge. I should have said: 'Uncle, just look at Jesus.'

In Jesus Christ, his Son, God comes to us and says: Here I am. This is who I am. This is what I am. Believe in me.

Thus Jesus Christ said:

'If you knew me, you would know my Father also' [John 8:19].

'I and the Father are one' [John 10:30].

'When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me' [John 12:44,45].

'If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him ... Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say "Show us the Father"?' [John 14:7,9].

About Jesus it is said:

'... and they will call him "Immanuel" - which means "God with us" ' [Matthew 1:23].

'No one has ever seen God, but ... (Jesus) ... has made him known' [John 1:18].

He is 'God over all' [Romans 9:5].

'He is the image of the invisible God' [Colossians 1:15].

He is 'our great God and Saviour' [Titus 2:13; 2 Peter 1:1].

'The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being' [Hebrews 1:3].

'He is the true God' [1 John 5:20].

As anticipated by the prophet Isaiah, in the coming of Jesus Christ, God comes to us. This is a message of incredible good news, of news worth shouting from the mountain tops, that God, in whose holy presence no sinner can survive, comes to us, lives among us, in this unthreatening and highly knowable person called Jesus Christ:

'You who bring good tidings to Zion, go up on a high mountain. You who bring good tidings to Jerusalem, lift up your voice and shout, lift is up and say to the towns of Judah, "Here is your God!"' [Isaiah 40:9].
