WOMEN OF FAITH

STUDY ONE: MIRIAM - Exodus 14,15

© Rosemary Bardsley 2015

1. FOUR FRIGHTENING FACTS
What did Miriam see as she stood with the Israelites on the edge of the Red Sea?

Read these verses and list the frightening facts about the situation:

Exodus 14:6

Exodus 14:7

Exodus 14:8

Exodus 14:9

It was a terrible situation. A helpless, unprotected multitude – children, women, old people, pursued by the thundering horses and chariots and top soldiers of Egypt. The men are slowed down by the care of their stock, and loaded down with possessions. The Red Sea was in front of them. The army of Egypt was behind them.

It was an impossible situation. There was no way out. The Israelites believed that they were about to be killed by the Egyptians and wished they were still slaves in Egypt [Exodus 14:10-12].

2. FIVE FACTS FOR FAITH
But Moses stood there saying ‘Do not be afraid!’ [Exodus 14:13]. He had extra information that enabled him to look at the situation with faith instead of fear.

Read these verses and list what Moses knew:
Exodus 14:1,2

Exodus 14:4

Exodus 14:4

Exodus 14:13

Exodus 14:14

Moses was in touch with the Sovereign God – the God who is Lord of all, who does what ever he pleases.

Check out these verses to understand how powerful God is:
Genesis 45:5ff

Genesis 50:19

Psalm 115:3

Isaiah 40:13,14,22-24

Isaiah 44:24-28

Isaiah 45:5-7

Isaiah 46:9-13

Isaiah 55:8-11

Jeremiah 4:28

Matthew 26:53

John 19:11

Acts 2:23

Romans 8:28

3. A NEW PERSPECTIVE
Read Exodus 15:1-18. This is the song which Moses sang after God’s great victory. After Moses had sung his song Miriam sang it as she lead the women in music and dancing and praise to the Lord [Exodus 15:20-21]. From these verses list words and phrases which are used to describe God:
15:1

15:2

15:3

15:6

15:13

15:16

15:17

15:18

4. A PERSONAL CHALLENGE
Even after this amazing rescue the Israelites soon forgot how great and powerful God is. They continued to respond with fear instead of faith.

In the death of Jesus Christ on the cross God provides an even more amazing rescue – a rescue from sin, judgement, condemnation and death.

What is our response? Is it fear or faith? Is it a life committed to honour this great God who has given us so great a salvation?
