Does the Bible Say
This series of weekly meditations looks at things that are commonly said or believed by Christians but have no solid support in the Bible.
I am posting these thoughts because some things that Christians say have a high potential to undermine, and effectively undo, the peace and joy that is ours in Christ Jesus. By doing so they insult Jesus Christ and the salvation he purchased for us by his blood, and they diminish our confidence that Jesus Christ has completely and permanently restored our relationship with God. The rest for our souls that Jesus promised is replaced by fear and guilt in the presence of God, in the presence of other believers, and in the deep recesses of our hearts and minds.
Not only do some things that Christians teach undermine confidence in the cross-work of Christ, some things that are taught and written also dishonour Christ himself.
It is quite likely that some of these meditations will be offensive to some Christians; it is difficult for us to let go of long-held beliefs. But God's truth is the most important thing, more important than those long held beliefs, more important than current popular theology, for it is his truth that sets us free - free from our ignorance of God, free from our alienation from God, free from our fear of God's judgement and wrath, free from our merit-based mindset. Free to embrace and live in the joy and peace of his amazing, immeasurable, incomprehensible grace.
