HIDDEN

Copyright Rosemary Bardsley 2022

This message outline consists of a number of scriptural references to the concept of being 'hidden' by God or in God. Some express a human yearning to be hidden - a desire for security and safety. Some express the truth that God does indeed hide us. The ultimate reality of hiddenness is our spiritual security and safety 'in Christ'.

Our human longing -

Psalm 17:8

'Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings ...'

Psalm 57:1

'I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed.'

Psalm 63:7

'I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.'

Job 14:13

'If only you would hide me in the grave and conceal me till your anger has passed.'

God's gracious provision -

Psalm 91:4

'He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.'

Pslam 27:5

'in the day of trouble ... he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle, he will set me high upon a rock.'

Psalm 31:20

'In the shelter of your presence you hide them ... in your dwelling you keep them safe from accusing tongues'

Psalm 83:3

'With cunning they conspire against your people; they plot against those you cherish (the word means 'hidden away').'

Exodus 33:18 - 23

'...you cannot see my face for no one may see me and live. ... There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by ...'

Hidden in Christ - the ultimate fulfilment of our spiritual longing and our spiritual need

Colossians 3:3

'For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.'

But do we accept this salvation that God has freely provided in Christ?

Matthew 23:37

'O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.'
