FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF GOD’S JUDGMENT

Genesis 3:14,15

'So the LORD God said to the serpent … cursed are you … he will crush your head, and you will bruise his heel …'

God's judgment upon Satan is stated and implemented.

Satan's defeat by Christ is affirmed and anticipated right from the beginning of his activity on earth.

Matt 8:29

'have you come to torture us before the appointed time?'

There is a time appointed for the punishment of the demons.

Matt 25:41

'Depart from me … into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.'

Eternal punishment [hell] is the ultimate destination of the devil and his angels at the judgment day. In fact, hell has been prepared for them.

Romans 16:20

'The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet'

Anticipating the final judgment of Satan

2 Thess 2:8

'the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendour of his coming'

The extended passage verses 1 to 12 teaches about the coming and the activity of 'the lawlessness one'. He is called a 'man' [v3], and does the deceptive and evil work of Satan [v9-10]. From the passage it is difficult to know if this person is actually Satan, an individual human agent of Satan, or a figure symbolizing mankind's apostasy.

The important points for our purpose are:

[1] his ability to deceive

[2] his evil

[3] his self-exaltation as God

[4] his ability to counterfeit all kinds of miracles, signs and wonders

[5] his ultimate overthrow and defeat by the Lord Jesus

1 Tim 3:6

'he will become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil'

A reference to Satan's pride by which he attempted to exalt himself above God.

Rev 20:10

'And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulphur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever'

The final judgment and punishment of Satan and his cohorts.

From the above passages we learn:

  • God's curse is upon Satan

  • Satan's defeat by Christ was planned and assured

  • A final judgment of Satan and his demons will occur at God's appointed time
